Plot Summary/Synopsis
El Derecho de Nacer is a heartfelt double narrative about love and loss. When a beautiful young woman asks her doctor, Alberto Limoneta, for advice on an unwanted pregnancy, he begins telling her a tale that he hopes will help her make the decision easier. Alberto narrates the history of the Veracruz family. Headed by the Don Rafael Del Junco, the Veracruz family experiences much hardship and adversity. The Veracruz women, María Elena, Matilde, and their mother, Doña Constancia, are subjected to the fierce traditionalism of Don Rafael. Hence, when María Elena becomes pregnant from an elicit affair with Alfredo Martinez, Don Rafael is infuriated. Fearful that his daughter will shame the family’s name, Don Rafael sends María Elena into exile and plans to murder the child once it is born. The resourceful María Elena devises a plan to save the life of her son, who turns out to be the narrator Alberto Limoneta. Alberto then recounts a life of passion, betrayal, and estrangement as he tries to teach his young patient lessons of family and honor.
